APS-Perth presents Altered States Series: Workshop Three (Citizen Research – DIY Testing)

  • Hilarys Boat Harbour 86 Southside Drive Hillarys, WA, 6025 Australia (map)

The Altered States Series is a collection of seminars, symposia and workshops in Perth that was launched by the Australian Psychedelic Society in August 2020. Altered States aims to provide the Perth community with the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience about how to best utilise altered states of consciousness to manage mental health issues and improve psychological wellness. This will be approached using the same framework that is used to provide psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy: preparation, altered state and then integration.

Following Session 2 – Psychopharmacology held in November where Dr Stephen Bright facilitated a discussion about the effects that psychedelics medicines have on the brain and body, the Australian Psychedelic Society warmly welcomes the Perth community to the third official Altered States event.

Session 3 – DIY Reagent Substance Testing

So you have successfully prepared for a psychedelic session psychologically and understand the effects of psychedelic medicines on the brain and body; but with the illicit nature of these medicines, how can you be sure that the procured substance is what you have been told it was?

The third seminar in the Altered States series aims to address this concern by educating psychonauts - budding or seasoned veterans alike - on how to correctly use reagent substance testing kits, interpret their results and describe the limitations this form of substance testing carries. In doing so, we hope to create “citizen researchers” who are able to report back their results so the community can be alerted if anything unexpected is doing the rounds. Joe Panaia of Students for Sensible Drug Policy will lead the session and attendees will be sent home with their very own, reusable substance testing kits.

Each kit that comes with a $20 ticket is worth about $40 retail. If you just want to attend and don’t want a kit (e.g., if you are coming with a significant other), please select the $5 ticket option.

Sharing can occur formally during the interactive session, or informally afterwards with snacks provided to allow people the opportunity to connect with members of existing networks and develop new connections.

Location:
A map of Hillary's showing the exact location of the event will be e-mailed to ticket holders at least two weeks prior to the event.
